The Proper Care of Garage Door Weatherstripping

Ever notice how things tend to look and work better when they are cleaned and cared for? Your garage door--and your garage door weatherstripping--are no different. Weatherstripping on a garage door has a specific and important purpose. It helps form a seal against rain, bugs, dust, snow, drafts, and the hot summer sun. When it's lubricated and kept free of debris it will do its job for years.

Here's how you can make sure your garage door weatherstripping lasts as long as it can.

CleaningProducts

First, you clean.

Rags, all-purpose cleaner, and elbow grease are all you'll need to properly clean your weatherstripping. Rinse your rags often. Don't forget about the weatherstrip between each of your door panels. As you clean, inspect for dryness, cracking, or places where the weatherstripping is detaching.

Then, you lubricate.

Keeping the weatherstripping pliable is what allows it to do its job. Harsh, dry, hot, and sunny conditions can compromise the integrity of the material. To beef up its resistence, apply a silicone-based lubricant to the weather stripping according to the package directions every two to three months. NEVER use a petroleum-based lubricant as it will dry up, crack, and gum up the works.

If your weather stripping is dry, cracked, or no longer flexible, it can no longer perform as intended and will need to be replaced. Need help? Just call! We're happy to inspect your entire garage door free of charge to make sure it continues to work safely and reliably for years to come.
