Practice Garage Door Safety Every Month of the Year

Practice these garage door safety tips this fall.

September is here, and that means the hustle and bustle of school days, game nights, and practice sessions has resumed in full swing. It also means that your garage door is getting quite the workout.

While June remains Garage Door Safety Month, it's worth practicing good garage door safety habits now--and every month of the year. Your garage door is the largest moving object and likely the most used entry point to your home. It is for this reason that we recommend keeping your garage door and automatic openers in proper working condition.

Here are some industry tips and advice on how to keep your garage door safe and its components in good working order, and how to avoid garage door accidents.

  • Make sure the garage door opener control button is out of the reach of children. Never let a small child play with a garage door remote control.
  • Teach children to keep their hands and fingers away from garage door sections.
  • Never leave the garage door partially open.
  • If leaving for an extended period of time, disconnect the garage door opener unit from its power source or use the vacation lock security switch on the wall console, which renders remotes unusable. Note: This is an optional accessory to most openers.
  • Prevent pinching accidents with Overhead Door's pinch-resistant door panels.
  • Inspect all garage doors for normal and abnormal wear and tear, paying particular attention to springs, cables, rollers and pulleys.
  • Test the reversing mechanism by placing a 2-inch by 4-inch board in the door’s path. If the door does not reverse after contacting the object, call a qualified garage door professional for repair.
  • If the opener has not been replaced since 1993, replace the garage door opener with a new one that has safety beams and auto-reverse as a standard feature.

So many garage door accidents can be prevented, and we at Overhead Door of Sioux City and Overhead Door of Yankton want you to feel empowered and equipped to spot trouble before it starts. We are here to answer your questions and help you inspect your garage doors at any time. Just give us a call.
