Overhead Door of Sioux City offers garage door safety tips.

If you've been reading our blog for a bit, you know we're pretty proud of the fact that our company was the inventor of the upward-lifting garage door. We know garage doors better than anyone, from their design, their materials, their working parts, and what it takes to make them last as long as possible.

When more than 70% of homeowners enter and exit their homes through a garage door an average of 4x per day, we take their care and maintenance pretty seriously. This means offering to do inspections, maintenance checks, and providing upgrades to mechanical components, like garage door openers, and security measures, like our OHD Anywhere™

Here are some garage door safety tips to keep in mind this summer, and throughout the year.

  1. Make sure the reversing mechanism is working properly. The easiest way to do this is to place a 2x4 in the path of the door. The door should reverse upon making contact with the board. If not, call us. Your garage door is not as safe as it could be.
  2. Teach children to respect the garage door by keeping control buttons high and out of reach, and to supervise children when they play around the door. Garage door openers are not toys; they operate the largest--and heaviest--component of your home's exterior.
  3. Keep a weather eye out. Nothing beats a regular inspection of your garage door for wear and tear, especially with the springs, cables, rollers and pulleys. Does it look ok? Does it sound ok? Does it behave as it should? Do not attempt to remove, adjust or repair these parts; they under extreme tension and should only be fixed by a trained garage door professional.
  4. Keep your garage clean. This means maintaining clear, clutter-free paths to vehicles and the items you have stored there. This lessons the chance that items will fall on your garage door tracks or cause other irreversible damage.

What else can we do for you to help you make sure your garage has a safe and functional summer?
