Put Garage Door Safety On The Back-To-School List

If you have children going back to school this fall, your to-do list is most likely a mile long. Notebooks have to be bought, haircuts must be scheduled, and backpacks need to be filled. Before you tackle these tasks, however, you should take the time to review garage door safety practices with your children. Safety should always be your family’s first priority.

Why Is Garage Door Safety Important To Discuss?

Children, and many adults, forget that garage doors are heavy pieces of machinery. If children get their limbs stuck in or under the door, serious injuries can result. In fact, garage doors lead to more injuries than most people would guess.

Starting The Safety Conversation

How can you ensure your child follows garage door safety practices? Luckily, Garage Door Care has come up with a simple acronym that summarizes garage door safety tips – D O O R Safe. Use this phrase to help your child remember the following:

DOORs are heavy. Never stand, run, or play under or near any garage door, especially when the door is open or moving.

OPENERS are for adults. Never play with the button on the wall that opens and closes the garage door.

OUCH! Never touch any part of a moving garage door. Your fingers can get hurt!

REMOTES are for adults. Never play with the remote control in the car or on an adult’s keychain.

Don’t Forget To Follow Other Safety Practices

While having a safety conversation with your child is one of the most important things you can do to prevent garage door injuries, you should also check that your garage door’s sensors and auto-reverse feature are functioning. To do this safely, place a paper towel roll underneath an open garage door and see if the door stops and reverses its motion.

Back-to-school season can get hectic, but don’t forget to review garage door safety practices with your children. If you put safety on the top of your to-do list, they will, too!
