As 2015 ducks out of sight, we look ahead to see what is trending in garage door styles and technology for the coming year. A lot of the advancements we are seeing for the 2016 garage door trends are building on what happened the year before; garage doors continue to be statement pieces full of windows, color, and personality, and they have more technology upgrades than ever.
If you are in the market for a new garage door, 2016 may be just the year to upgrade, especially with the improved style and safety features now available. Here's what you have to look forward to.
1. Bigger is keeps getting better.
We love how the today's new homes are showcasing the garages as an important part of the structure (because they are). The latest garage door designs are not only fully integrated into a home's style, but also look pretty amazing on their own. This is a good thing, because garage doors are keep getting bigger, and must keep up the pace with style and curb appeal or risk looking bulky, commercial, or out of place.
2. Multiple-car garages are making a comeback.
On the flip side, if you don't want one massive door on the front or side of your home, you have more options than ever for several bays. The 2016 garage doors coming down the pipe look great in a series, much like they do here on this contemporary home. In this case, simple and uniform doors keep with the style of the home while drawing just enough--but not too much--attention to themselves.
3. Think outside of the garage.
We've written several posts about the developing trend of using overhead garage doors as both windows and ways to expand into the landscape. Homes and business alike can benefit from this joining of outside and in, especially as technology improves the thermal properies of glass (and glass-like composites). If you have an amazing view, full-glass garage doors allow you to completely take it in, or out, as you and the weather see fit.
4. Fearless spins on the color wheel.
We've written extensively about garage doors of every color of the rainbow, and we're happy to report that 2016 will see homeowners really embracing the color wheel into their home design, both on their front doors and their garage doors (really, the two go hand in hand). Like the home shown below, where orange is the boldness that brings it all together, a unifying color scheme on the entry points of a home is both welcoming and pleasing to the eye. And it's okay to stick to a more neutral palette, too--grays, browns, and whites have also gotten a modern upgrade in 2016. Ask us for our color palette to learn more!
5. Technology keeps evolving.
As the Internet of Things evolves and expands, so does the ability of your smart phone to control everything in your house. With the swipe of a finger, you can see at a glance if your garage door is open (and open it), if your front door is locked, what temperature your home is, and when the last time the back door was used. And you can do it from anywhere in the world. Be on the look out for this technology to become more and more commercially available, as it's a trend that's not likely to stop anytime soon.
On top of that, look for even more security features. With current technology, you no longer have to worry about giving out a garage key or code to a cleaning or maintenance service; you just need them to notify you of their arrival and y ou can provide access remotely. As in 2015, the next-tech garage openers will offer contintued advancements in battery backup, quiet belt drives, security and safety monitors and side-mount installations.
6. Maintenance-Free Garage Doors.
As garage doors and openers become more streamlined and efficient, and as garage door companies continue to provide customer-forward service, maintenance on the largest moving object in the home becomes much easier to do. While it's always a good idea to become familiar with all the major components of a garage door, and to monitor its use, homeowners will rely more and more on technology and their service providers to open (and close) the door on garage door inspections, maintenance and service.
Will 2016 be The Year of The New Garage Door for you? Is it time to get your current door inspected and maintained? Both are are just a click away.
